Self-Portrait With Two Circles (c.1665) Rembrandt van Rijn Inspiration piece for Ka-Son for the Under the Influence show, Fall 2016 |
"Rembrandt's work, and his life, has been a big influence on my work as a whole. His painting Self-Portrait With Two Circles shows him as an older man, at the peak of his powers as master painter. I wanted to paint my idea of an artist who is a student of Rembrandtian painting. But rather than use a human face, I wanted that student to be represented by the typical tool of a student artist: the wooden mannequin.
I also wanted to give that mannequin the life seen in many of Rembrandt's paintings, so I imagined the life of the mannequin himself, in his studio, with a family, and with some of his own paintings on the wall. The mannequin is me."
