The Maja and the Masked Man
Francisco Goya
Inspiration piece for Jill Lear for the
Under the Influence show, Fall 2016

"My inspiration is Goya's The Maja and the Masked Man. My obsession is structure. The spiraling, cascading nautilus-like structure that is found is this painting is the springboard. This painting is one in a series I began a few years ago as a challenge to myself. The subjects were a carefully selected group of my favorite Old Master paintings. The goal was to capture the essence of the structure in each painting in as few marks as possible. This was my meditation at the end of each day of work. It allowed me to focus deeply on what intrigued me about the painting and to record it in my own language."
