Big Julie (1945) Fernand Léger Inspiration piece for Joan Mellon for the Under the Influence show, Fall 2016 |
"Fernand Léger's painting Big Julie is one I had liked for many years by the time I made Homage to Léger's 'Big Julie'. I had been fascinated by the way Léger divided the vertical space of his painting into two large areas of color -- black and yellow -- and how he joined that divide as the twisting and turning arm of the mechanical woman in the black space reached into the yellow space containing a jumble of white tubular forms and becoming part of it. This way of joining two areas of color while keeping them separate stayed with me. "That," I thought, "is a good idea and good painting."
While Léger's Big Julie came to mind often, it was not until I was thinking of a title for my 2011 painting that I realized the influence Léger's 1945 work had on me."
