Life is Violent Lucy Rovetto acrylic paint and collage, 12" x 21"; $250 Exhibited at Village West in the Under the Influence show, Fall 2016 |
Guernica Pablo Picasso Inspiration piece for Lucy Rovetto for the Under the Influence show, Fall 2016 |
"This oil painting was Picasso's response to the bombing of Guernica, a country village in
Northern Spain, by German and Italian warplanes. The legend is at the time of the attack most of
the men were away fighting in the war, leaving those targeted by the attack mainly women and
children innocently gathered at market.
After the recent attack on an Orlando nightclub, I needed a way to process the discomfort I was
feeling as I watched what I felt to be an exaggerated public outcry, as if these victims were
any more innocent then the millions of human beings killed all over the world everyday.
My palette asks if everything is ever black and white, a shock of red represents the swirl of
violence throughout the world, a figure emerges representing my confusion, while the female
figure representing earth asks for a response."
