Several Circles (1926) Wassily Kandinsky Inspiration piece for Aimée Rudic for the Under the Influence show, Fall 2016 |
"In 2012 I lost one of the greatest loves of my life, my best
friend, Jill. She drowned in the ocean after being swept away by a rip tide.
Her husband, an avid surfer, was in the water with her and nearly drowned trying to save her and
their unborn child in her belly.
The story alone is gut wrenching. After her death, I could not shake the visual of what might
have happened the moment they both went unconscious after fighting for their life and the life
of their unborn. Their struggle could have lasted hours or minutes as they fought the power of
the ocean. She lost consciousness first, he followed after he took what he thought was his last
breath. Then, stillness, whiteness, silence.
This piece explores a cross section of two complex souls, in new ringing silence, drifting apart.
Kandisky said 'the circle is the synthesis of the greatest oppositions. It combines the
concentric and the eccentric in a single form and in equilibrium. Of the three primary forms,
it points most clearly to the fourth dimension.'
Kandinsky's piece Several Circles has an ethereal lightness that could be interpreted as a
spirit being formed or alternatively being released from its human casing. In my piece, Adrift 3,
I am most influenced by Kandinsky's circle that is, somehow, universally interpreted as a symbol
for the soul, celestial journey and the forth dimension."
