Saint Thomas Aquinas Aided by Saints Peter and Paul
Bartolomeo degli Erri
Inspiration piece for Florina Sbircea for the
Under the Influence show, Fall 2016

"A visit to the Metropolitan Museum earlier this year brought me in front of a small painted panel by Bartolomeo degli Erri. Inspired, later in my studio I finished Sundown I, a work on paper composed of layers of various metalpoints and hematite that I began some months prior.

It is possible that similar materials were used by this Quattrocento artist from Modena in his painting depicting Saint Thomas, which appears twice against an almost symmetrical medieval structure. The elusive symmetry of the scene, the natural pigments and gold are elements I reflected on. My use of the raw materials as well as the process, questions into the Early Renaissance painting, while it turns into subject."
