![]() Majorettes (1962) Wayne Thiebaud Inspiration piece for Linda Streicher for the Under the Influence show, Fall 2016 |
"Unlike any other singular artist, Wayne Thiebaud has taught me how to explore the beauty and lushness of oil paint. In Majorettes, the figures blend into the flat background in some areas, and catch light and shade in others, to emerge explosively against the creamy white backdrop. Thiebaud uses color and texture to make his edges vibrate and pop. The batons and angled limbs capture light and create a minimal depth.
In Illuminated Planes and Obstructions, I emphasize flatness with three backdrop planes that parallel the canvas. My nearly white vertical obstructions, meant to vibrate and create a sense of minimal depth, comprise an array of colors. My shadows, although subtler than Thiebaud's, define objects and planes. The dark purple above the horizon line is a direct nod to the majorettes' shadows and connote a lack of illumination."
